Episode 4: The Stories in My Head Were Distorting My Reality: Lessons From July
July gave me some lessons that I genuinely believe could change the trajectory of my life.
In this episode, I’m taking you behind the scenes of three things I found myself spiraling over in July and three massive realizations I’m carrying with me into August.
We’re talking motherhood and comparing milestones, the uncertainty of betting on myself and my business, and what happened when I realized I was following someone else’s blueprint instead of trusting my own gut.
But the biggest shifts came when I started paying closer attention to the stories running through my head.
I realized how often my inner dialogue was distorting what was actually in front of me. I could say I was grateful for my life while simultaneously telling myself stories that made my house, my marriage, motherhood, or my current circumstances feel like they weren’t enough.
And then came another realization I haven't been able to unsee: when I didn't know why something happened, my brain almost automatically chose the explanation that made me the problem.
What if I’m a bad mom?
What if I screwed this up?
What if I’m not doing enough?
What if this happened because there’s something wrong with me?
When there were five possible explanations, why was I constantly choosing the one that gave me the most fault?
That question has completely changed the way I talk to myself and the conversations I’m having with my clients.
In this episode, I talk about:
- Comparing my son's milestones to other kids and how quickly that turned into questioning myself as a mom
- Sitting in the incredibly uncomfortable uncertainty between where I am and where I want to be in my business
- Recognizing my old pattern of getting more jobs whenever entrepreneurship starts to feel financially scary
- The difference between pushing through normal discomfort and ignoring your gut because someone else's "blueprint" says you should
- Why I've completely changed the way I think about hobbies and their role in connection
- Realizing that my own stories were preventing me from fully experiencing gratitude for the life I already have
- The ways I was distorting the reality of my home, my marriage, and even my experience of motherhood
- Why our inner dialogue can make us miserable inside circumstances that aren't actually the problem
- Catching my tendency to automatically choose the explanation that makes me the villain
- The question I'm practicing now: What else could be true here?
- Why you don't have to jump from a negative story to rainbows and unicorns. Sometimes getting to neutral is enough.
One of my biggest takeaways from July is that the conversations happening inside our heads don't stay there. They affect our energy, our relationships, our presence, our decisions, and ultimately how we experience our lives.
If we can stop automatically choosing the story that says we're inadequate, not enough, or somehow to blame, there is so much more joy, peace, connection, love, belonging, and possibility available to us.
And sometimes the first step is simply asking:
What else could be possible here?
If this episode brings up an aha for you, I’d genuinely love to hear it. DM me and tell me what resonated, what you’re working through, or what you want me to go deeper on in a future episode.
And if you’re realizing how hard it is to see your own stories clearly when you’re living inside of them, this is exactly the kind of work I do with my coaching clients. DM me and let’s have a conversation about how I can support you.
